Asbury United Methodist Church
Shaped to Serve
In 1789 Daniel Asbury, a circuit-riding preacher came through this area preaching the gospel and inspired the formation of our church that today bears his name. The first congregation was organized in 1816 and met in homes. After the Civil War, Asbury Methodist Church was named and organized in 1863. The first church, a one-room frame building, was built in 1878 and was a church and school for 17 years. It was located on what is now Highway 27, near the Chuckwagon Grill.
In 1895 a second church, a one-room brick building was built. The land was purchased from Henry and Mary Shrum and from A. A. and M. M. Bynum. With the help of free laborers, W. F. Finger made and laid the brick for this building. Four classrooms were added in 1935. The building now used as the Scout Hut was built in 1948. It featured indoor plumbing, and was used as a chapel and Sunday School Classroom with 100 young adults.
The present church was constructed in 1952 by contractors Joe M. Shuford and Sons. The Rev. N. L. Oliver preached the first sermon on March 8, 1953. In 1967 a ten-classroom educational building was completed, and a new entrance tower and steeple were constructed. In 1989 extensive renovations to the sanctuary, church offices, library, and other parts of the building were completed. There was a note-burning ceremony and rededication of the sanctuary on December 4, 1994.
Children are precious to Asbury UMC, as is their spiritual growth. Asbury believes strongly in nurturing our youngest members so they can bloom and become strong in their walk with the Lord.
All children are welcome, cared for and loved by our dedicated ministry volunteers.

Asbury UMC offers programs for Middle School and High School youth on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 – 8:00 pm. We enjoy time spent laughing, sharing and caring for one another in addition to studying God’s word.
Our youth leaders work hard to find Bible study topics that are relevant for today’s youth. Recent studies have included: “My Testimony,” “The Beatitudes,” and “Living a Jesus Centered Life”. Sometimes we use our time together for open sharing, where we discuss current events or anything that might be on their hearts and minds.
on the second wednesday of each month our middle school youth travel to boger city rest home where we play bingo with residents and visit with them in their living areas and resident rooms. our service trips have included serving lunch at christian ministries, working with the asheville homeless mission and several of our youth worked with orphans during our honduras mission trip over the summer
Our youth enjoy a variety of fun fellowship opportunities throughout the year. We watch movies, play games, go bowling, travel to McAdenville to see the Christmas lights (which always includes a stop at Krispy Kreme) and much more.

Asbury has a rich tradition of helping our neighbors. We donate food and clothing to needy families, build handicap ramps, volunteer at our local Christian thrift store and Habitat ReStore, support missionaries and mission trips. We invite our community to participate in our Vacation Bible School, Back-to-School Bash, Chicken Pie Day, Fall Festival, Breakfast with Santa, and Clothes Give-away. We sponsor a Preschool for two, three and four year old children, Mother’s Morning Out on Thursdays and Fridays, and a Summer Day Camp for first through fifth grade children. The Preschool was envisioned and established by Brenda Hardin in 1989 and provides a nurturing environment for children to learn not only their ABCs and 123s, but also Bible stories and the love of Jesus Christ. We also sponsor Cub Scout Pack 82 and Boy Scout Troop 82. We go out into our community and help build Habitat houses, work in the soup kitchen, pack food boxes for Christian Ministry, send backpacks of food to school children, help at the homeless shelters. Often our efforts extend beyond the local community. We send donations to and work at Henderson Settlement in Frakes, Kentucky and Honduras, collect shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse, prepare meals for Stop Hunger Now, and collect Shoes for Orphan Souls. As we strive to live out our mission “Shaped to Serve,” we invite you to join us. For more information about any of the serving opportunities listed please click the below.
Asbury UMC Preschool offers a unique experience of learning, loving and developing for children ages 2-4. Our experienced staff, many who have worked at the preschool for over ten years, teach a Bible-based curriculum that makes learning fun and emphasizes social skills. Activities, crafts, and songs are chosen to help children grow developmentally through the use of paints, glue, scissors, crayons, paper and more. Vocabulary is expanded through stories and books, as our teachers make reading a priority in the classroom. Making friends, taking turns, waiting, helping, sharing, caring and playing help children grow and learn in ways that make them well rounded.
